Winds of Change

By Ted Reiff

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, I telephoned Houston TRP Area Associate Caroline Kostak to see how she fared. Caroline is a former NASA flight controller (shuttle and space station programs) whose husband is a NASA manager. Since connecting with TRP, Caroline has been an industrious, enthusiastic asset in the area and I could imagine her in the thick of things, offering aid and expertise. I was right.

At the time we talked, Caroline and husband Phil had helped stabilize seven homes, removing damaged drywall and insulation and working through a network of people in South Houston, Dickenson and Clear Lake (where their own home, built on stilts, survived). No doubt that number has grown since we talked.

Caroline has noticed that residents are throwing out items that are still usable - probably out of frustration - and is working to get the word out that her forthcoming warehouse (Repurpose Depot) will accept usable building materials in advance of its official opening.

TRP is keeping Caroline, Phil, and everyone in Houston, and now Florida, in our thoughts.

Significant actions taken at the most recent TRP board meeting included:

Shannon Barnes was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Congratulations, Shannon!

Kirk Hoeffler was elected board chairman, term effective immediately through December 31, 2018. Chicago Regional Associate and current board member Ken Ortiz will take over as chairman at that time.

Brandy Sosa and Jeff Cockerell, Oakland and Los Angeles retail managers, respectively, joined the TRP advisory board.

Recent non-board actions include:

Deconstruction Manager Ezequiel Borquez was promoted to Director of Deconstruction. He will retain full authority over all deconstruction operations, while focusing on donor/client development, bidding, safety, training and administrative functions. Sean Trujillo is expected to replace Ezequiel as deconstruction manager, and will be responsible for all field operations, including supervision of deconstruction crews.

And, finally ...

Several years ago, I announced my pending retirement, the final day projected to be December 31, 2018.

After private discussions with key managers and board members, I recanted a bit during the July 2017 board meeting, when it was agreed that I would step down as president and resign my officer position, but remain an employee and board member, focusing on special projects and strategic planning. In other words, I'll step back but not completely out of the action.

So, since I am not retiring after all, there goes my cliff house in Corsica and my 80-foot powerboat. Can't donate them to TRP - Brandy and Jeff take strictly used building materials -- and I have only myself to blame for that.
