Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Marks 10th Anniversary
On Friday, November 5, The ReUse People launched
a month-long celebration in honor of its 10th anniversary
with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by TRP's board of
directors and board of advisors, ambassadors from the Alameda
Chamber of Commerce, Alameda Vice Mayor Marie Gilmore, City
Councilman Frank Materese and other city employees.
During
a brief address to the assembled dignitaries, the vice mayor
expressed admiration for TRP's mission and appreciation for
its success in keeping building materials out of landfills.
She noted the symmetry of having a reuse facility located
on the former Alameda Naval Base, which is itself being reused.
TRP did its first pickup of used building materials during
Thanksgiving week, 1994, in the San Diego area. A lot of lumber
has been diverted since then—hundreds of thousands of
tons of reusable building materials of every conceivable description
throughout California.
In 2000, TRP moved to the SF Bay Area on a grant from the
Alameda County Waste Management Authority, then relocated
to Alameda Point two years ago after outgrowing the Davis
Street location in San Leandro.
Word of TRP's accomplishments is spreading. TRP was named
“Best of 2004” in San Francisco Magazine as the
“best place to get great stuff donated by other people.”
President Ted Reiff has been interviewed by the Los Angeles
Times and the Contra Costa Times; by Channel 30, CTV Tri-Valley;
and by Oakland Cable Access. He was a recent guest on "On
the House" with the Carey Brothers, Radio KSFO and KCSO.
Evening Edition on KPIX TV will feature an interview with
Ted on November 16, 2004. KNTV's popular show, "In Wine
Country," is running a three-part series on the kitchen
remodel of peninsula restaurant-owner Jessie Cool, which began
with TRP's deconstruction of the original kitchen. The final
segments will air on two consecutive Sundays, November 14
and 21, at 6:30 p.m. on KNTV Channel 11.
Congratulations TRP! You've come a long way! |
