TRP Helps Host Deconstruction Convention
By Ted Reiff
On September 1, we hosted a tour of the TRP warehouse by
participants of DECON 04, a convention of experienced and
startup deconstruction companies from Vermont to Washington,
California to Florida, and points between. It's exciting to
see so many talented people getting involved in this promising
industry.
The convention, which ran two days, was cosponsored by Region
9 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and
the Used Building Materials Association. The main events were
held at Preservation Park in Oakland and included workshops
and panels on marketing used building materials, insurance
and IRS issues, Department of Defense deconstruction projects,
bidding procedures, and just about everything else you ever
wanted to know about deconstruction. TRP presented at two
of the panel discussions.
Since TRP's ReUse Bazaar is adjacent to acres of tarmac (now
used primarily for parking), in addition to the tour, our
location featured demonstrations of:
- High-reach equipment for materials handling on deconstruction
job sites
- Pneumatic de-nailing guns
- Specialized hand tools
- High-tech lead removal equipment
Participants had lunch at The Source, a great Alameda Point
restaurant. Then TRP conducted a one-hour tour of a job site
in Piedmont where we are deconstructing a 7,200 square foot
home with an indoor swimming pool and 900 square foot garage.
The home was built in 1924 and contains most of the original
materials. Deconstruction began just after the tour and the
materials will be flowing into our Alameda Warehouse in mid-September
and early October. |
