Sacramento Re-Use Store Open for Business
    By Ted Reiff

Manuel Hernandex on forkliftIn May of this year I wrote that the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps (SRCC) soon would be opening a reuse store. "Soon" turned out to be four months later than I expected, but for good reason. The building originally slated to house the store was needed for a different purpose, so the SRCC had to find a new location. The good news is, the store is now open and filled with high quality, low priced used building materials equivalent to those found at other TRP locations.

Visit the store at:

6350 27th Street, Sacramento, CA 95822 (northwest corner of 27th St. at 47th Ave.)
Hours: Wednesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Telephone: 916-556-1174

The SRCC Re-Use Store receives all materials salvaged from TRP deconstruction projects, from Modesto in the south to Marysville in the north and Lake Tahoe in the east. We haven't figured out where to draw the westerly line, since our Oakland store has a pretty good reach. I guess the respective store managers will have to arm-wrestle that one.

Manuel Hernandez stocking lighting fixturesTwo years ago I gave a presentation to all 12 members of the California Association of Local Conservation Corps during which I suggested that some of them ought to open reuse stores as a means to broaden their conservation and training missions and generate more supporting revenue. Dwight Washabaugh, Executive Director of the SRCC, stepped up to that challenge and with the able assistance of Deputy Director Andi Liebenbaum was able to secure a warehouse, obtain the start-up funding, hire staff and, with help from TRP and others, obtain enough materials to open the doors.

SRCC Re-Use Store materials include:

  1. Dimensional lumber, from 2x4s to 2x10s
  2. Glue-lam and solid wood beams up to 15 feet in length
  3. Windows
  4. Doors, including great looking antique doors
  5. Landscape materials such as bricks, pavers and stones donated by CalExpo, the home of the California State Fair

Tim Whitmore sorting new doorsThe store manager is yet to hired; however, other competent, knowledgeable staff are:
Steve Whertley, Re-Use Store Assistant Manager
Leisha Lee, Va'Shawn Wade, Tim Whitmore and Manuel Hernandez – Re-Use Specialists

To further bolster business for the Re-Use Store and TRP's deconstruction, distribution, and training business, we have hired a new area manager to develop and train TRP-certified deconstruction contractors in this market. Kristin Williams joined TRP beginning December 1. Kristin lives in Lodi and has been active in building preservation for many years. Anyone in Sacramento or the surrounding counties interested in our deconstruction and building materials services should call her at 209.241.3614

So, if you're one of those TRP customers who thought Oakland was too far to drive, now's the time to visit the SRCC Re-Use Store in Sacramento. Or, if you're a contractor in the area who wants to be trained in the art and science of deconstruction and building-materials salvage, now is a great time to enter this rapidly growing segment of the green-building industry.
